Ballast Water Treatment Upgrade

Project Overview

In July 2025, our Marine Department launched a strategic upgrade to meet new marine environmental regulations. Gary Potter managed the project for a MOD naval client. The task involved fabricating a new ballast water treatment system within a strict five-week delivery window. The work demanded precision engineering, full regulatory compliance, and efficient logistics.

Objectives

The goal was to fabricate ballast water treatment pipework in line with Lloyd’s Register rules for naval ship classification (2023 standards). This upgrade ensured the vessel complied with environmental requirements and remained operationally ready.

Project Detail

The team followed a clear, structured approach. Schedule 40 pipes were fabricated to match the existing system layout for seamless integration. Each pipe underwent rigorous pressure testing to confirm safety and performance. To improve durability and corrosion resistance, all pipes were sandblasted and galvanised using a dipping process.
The project progressed in three phases. Each batch included 46 pipes ranging from 3” to 8” in diameter. Advanced TIG and MIG welding techniques supported fabrication, while industrial-grade pressure testing maintained quality standards.
